FolderPls vs Pics.io: lightweight Drive tagging or a full DAM?

Both keep your files in Google Drive. Pics.io is a full digital asset management platform starting at $100/month; FolderPls is a lightweight tagging layer with a free plan. How to choose.

Pics.io and FolderPls both let you organize files without moving them out of Google Drive. They are built for very different jobs, though, and the price reflects that. Short version: if you need a digital asset management (DAM) system for a team, look at Pics.io. If you want to tag and find your own Drive files quickly, FolderPls is the lighter tool.

What Pics.io is

Pics.io is a DAM platform. You can bring your own storage — your existing Google Drive or Amazon S3 — or use storage included with the plan.[1] Its feature list covers tagging, advanced search, version control, metadata import and replication, and sharing portals with guest users, with an AI add-on for auto-tagging, visual and similar-image search and video summaries.[1]

  • Solo: $100/month, 1+ user.[1]
  • Micro: $250/month, or $225/month billed yearly, for 10+ users.[1]
  • Small: $800/month, or $680/month billed yearly, for 50+ users.[1]
  • Enterprise: custom pricing. A 7-day free trial is available.[1]

What FolderPls is

FolderPls is a tagging layer for Google Drive. You pick files with Google's file picker, add your own tags (optionally with an expiry date), filter by them, see how files and tags connect in a graph view, and open the original file in Drive. Auto-tagging suggests tags from file type, folder and date, and only runs when you start it. There's a free plan for personal Gmail accounts; paid plans are on the pricing page.

Choose Pics.io if…

  • you need to share curated collections with clients or partners through portals,
  • version history and metadata workflows are part of your process,
  • you want storage options beyond Google Drive,
  • and the budget fits a dedicated DAM.

Choose FolderPls if…

  • you mostly need to find your own files by client, status or campaign,
  • you're on a personal Gmail account (where Drive Labels aren't available — see Drive Labels limits),
  • you don't want to change where files live or how Drive is organized,
  • and a free or low-cost tool is the point.
